L'Estaque : View of the Bay of Marseilles
Cézanne's mother lived at l'Estaque, west of Marseilles where he painted few seascapes there. I'd fancy to have a bath in that blue sea. The composition of this picture is divided into four distinct zones, each marked by their different treatment and colour. In the foreground is the shoreline, then the smooth blue surface of the water interrupted here and there by the white fleck of a sail; and then the range of mountains with a thin strip of sky above. The horizon is placed extremely high.
